November 07 Obama Is it!The people have spoken and they have decided to elect the First black man to the presidency of the United States. We have come along way in only 40 years.
I think Jessie Jackson, Al Sharpton, and a lot of the other black activist are angry. Now that Obama has won they will have to be silent and fianlly put up or shut up. Obama will perform well and for all the folks who think otherwise will be very surprised.
I don't beleive in raises taxes; however we have gotten ourselves into this and we must get ourselves out.
May 21 So Sad!How is it possible for people to still let race get in the way in this year 2008? I am so dumb founded by the fact that 65% of people can vote for a person based on race. How can you call yourselves Christians and followers of Jesus and try and bend law to match your religious beliefs and then turn around and look down on a person because of his color. It is ashamed that you represent a man who walked the earth giving of himself and never asking of others; and asked us to do the same. Even if you are not a believer in a higher deity; one cannot dispute that Jesus lived on earth. He was a man and he had great teachings and was a great philosopher. If you are going to follow his teachings that would mean you would have to love everyone no matter what their color. Barrack Obama is a man; an educated, self motivated, and maybe even egotistical. However, he is just as qualified to be president as anyone else in the country. A person only needs to be 35 years old or greater, and a natural birth citizen of this country. (Qualifications to Be President) It is sad that we cannot see that any of us can lead this country and all it takes is the courage to stand up and have a dream or a vision. Right or wrong; as least you tried!
May 01 It's TimeI am not advocating any certain moral value because I am no one to judge. I am merely advocating a change in the way we do business.
Black Americans have an opportunity of a lifetime and they are about to screw it up HUGE! There are a lot of people in American who like myself are fascinated with mr. Obama and are willing to give him a chance. I don't care that his is black or that his name is Hussein.
I only care that he fixes our healthcare system, our energy crisis, and abolishes the IRS. We the people have the power; or have we forgotten that point. We may not control the mainstream media but we have the power of the internet and they cannot stop it. They are afraid and that's why they continue to try and tax the internet so it can be limited.
The time is now!
We can make a change!
April 24 A new BeginningI started a new position in Selma. It is a small town outside of Fresno. I was cut three weeks short from Kaiser because of a medication error. I won't go into more detail unless you want to email me and ask me personally.
Selma is a great place and for the most part I love all the people I work with; and it has a lot of potential for growth both professionally and personally. I am looking forward to my new beginning and especially the upcoming medical projects I want to start and finish.
April 17 The EndingWell,
I as I begin I must end; and three weeks early at that. I made a medication error last week on a patient and even wrote myself up; but they found it in their heart to release me from my contract three weeks early because they found the error so signifcant it warranted my immediate release.
However, as a manager myself and a nurse for over ten years. I can say the error I mad was a big one and stupid one; however I know I would have never fired my staff for such a reason; especially since I wrote myself up and I was totally honest about it. It is sad too me that this is how we are in nursing and they wonder why no one will resign their contracts at that particular ICU unit in Kaiser.
P.S. Thank you Anne; remember what comes around goes around.
Kharma is a bitch! April 11 Where to begin??What does nursing mean to you?
Well to me nursing is an art. A gift, a talent, and a passion. I have been in the medical field since 1987 and have worked in many different facilities and I must say that this place (Kaiser-Santa Clara) Takes the cake.
Staffing is in control of the scheduling and assignments and I try and explain that one must be an RN to assign another RN, LVN, or CNA; but my words fall on deaf ears. I asked the Manager for a full time job and she told me she had to ask staffing. Why? You are the manager and staffing should have nothing to do with you hiring or firing me. This is insane.
Another nurse by the name of Thuy (pronounced TWEE) reported off to me and when I questioned her on why she had turned off the Nitroglycerin drip from a fresh post-op Endarderectomy she went ballistic and told me that she was a nurse with her own license and that she would take care of the patient her way.
Well, Thuy, your way is not the right way and if you are going to nurse and care for a patient. Do it correctly. Endarterectomy's need to be managed very closely and the SBP and MAPS should be kept extremely low. Click on the link above Thuy and read! March 24 MovingWell,
I am into week five here at Kaiser and things are beginning to smooth out as far as my assignments. I am kind of scared to say that for fear things may change.
However, I still find it diffuclt to speak with some of these younger nurses because they have only worked here, have very little experience, and keep telling me how to be a nurse. It is truly funny.
I fianlly moved to a room. I am staying with Anna and her family; she is an RN at the facility and was kind enough to rent me a room. I like it very much and it will make the rest of my time here more enjoyable.
March 19 It's DifferentWell,
I know it has been a while since my last blog; but I have had a lot going on at home. My mom has been in the Intensive Care, my father-in-law has been in the ICU as well and two of my children has severe bronchitis or pneumonia. Damn, when it rains it pours. Kharma is like a hell storm; and beleive me what goes around comes around so always been nice and treat people as you want to be treated.
This is my fifth week at this facility and even though the work is easy the folks are difficult at times. My pay has been jacked up every week because they do not calculate hours like everyone else in America. I get floated on a regular basis. Four hours here, eight hours there. Kaiser's theme is to thrive but what patient can thrive if they do not have continuity of care?
It's funny to me because these so called charge nurses never take charge unless it is to correct you or write you up; and morale is at its lowest because they won't stand up and take charge. These things are simple fixes and would make a world of difference. Their staff treat the travlers like shit and they always try and give me the heaviest patients. However, like a soldier, I take it with a smile and I still sit on my ass whjile they run around like chickens with their heads cut off.
Nursins is hard enough without having to beat up on each other. We should be continually learning, growing, and helping each other with our stress and personal lives. We don't always have to agree but we should always be there for each other. It is a team profression; so stop acting like individuals. February 24 The Saga ContinuesWell, where shall I begin.
I know it has been a few days since I have posted and I have worked three of those four days. I have not been floated anymore yet; but I am discovering that Kaiser
definitely does things quite differently than the rest of the country. The care provided by the facility and Kaiser seem pretty nice but a lot of the nurses I have met so far and followed are something else.
I have met some other travelers that are outstanding and i would love to continue to work with them.
Stay tuned for the rest of ther story....................... February 18 Holy CowHoly Cow! It keeps getting better and better here. I oriented on Telementry last night because I want to be able to work as many days as possible. I am on a mission at home and this will help us a lot.
Anyhoo! I spent four hours on tele last night and then moved to the ICU. I felt bad for the nurse who gave me report because she had been in the ICU four hours and then was floated to the Stepdown. This is insane. They could have simply floated me; but I'm no fool. I kept my mouth shut and stayed in the uint. (he he)
I know I'm bad but the hell with it. It came back to me ten fold because the ladies I worked with gave me a tough time. I have to borrow one of their codes to the glucometer so I can perform my accue checks. She got upset because I don't have one. She said she got into trouble because of it before. I'm speechless.
Whatever!
Then, I was trying to give report and all the AM nurse cared about was that I did not put my intials on an IV bag. I hate picky ass nurses. Go back to school; fuck it; go to hell. That shit is so stupid. I know it is a technical issue but get a fucking life already.
Patients was us to care for them and ensure we get them better or at least make them comfortable. The y don't care about my damn intials or the fact that I don't have a a CODE. Give me a break!
You wouldn't last one day in a level one facility! Not 1 day!
Peace Out February 15 Travel Assignment Day Three Well, this is actually day two and three. I have been here for almost a week but I did not work a few days. Last night was my first night working in the ICU and it was something else. I have never seen so many spoiled brats in my life. I think it should be illegal for a new graduate or a new nurse period to join a union hospital. They don't understand how easy they have it here. No one seems to ever want to take responsibility here and they still have nurses falling all over each other and yet they still seem to be lost. I had two patients last night. Well, I started out with one because the day nurse felt the patient needed to be a one-to-one and they allowed it because they have no one in charge to push them. This man was an 82 y/o gentlemen who had a possible issue with his vascular system and we had to keep his Mean Arterial Pressures less than 80. So, they had him on labetolol, esmolol, and Nipride. I left on the Nipride to help reduce his afterload and kept his (Maps) less than 80 all night. I turned off both the labetolol and esmolol because they are pretty much the same and their was no need for all of those medications. Everyone I worked with seemed personable except a few of them did not even speak to me. I worked with Darius, Steve, Luz, Nina, and two other men and women. The two men helped me all night but damn it; I can't remember their names. I know it is bad of me but I am sorry guys. I am suffering from CRS. Anyway, I got my second patient at 1:30 AM and he was a 38 year old man who was suffering from Asthma. He was a huge dude too. He weighed 138 kilograms or 303 pounds. That is his main problem because if he would get down to 250 pounds or less his life would change dramatically. It was a good night overall; but this morning pissed me off. I did not get out of work until 8:00 AM because no one was assigned to my patients, nor did anyone want to take them. I had three nurses walking around with no patients and no assignment and none of them were willing to help out them team. That's a damn shame. Fuck; all three of you and you know who you are too. February 11 My First DayToday is my first day here at the kaiser facility in Santa Clara, California. I am scheduled to work in the ICU here for three months on the night shift. I prefer to work nights because I feel the night shift is a special breed. I began my orientation this morning at 6:45 am. I signed in at administration and was sent upstairs to the unit. Just as I would have expected; the morning started off in a Charlie Foxtrot. That is a nice way of saying cluster f*%$; or a mess. No one seemed to be in charge, no one wanted to listen to the person who was in charge, and everyone wanted it their own way.
The facility is under transistion and there will soon be a new Cardiovascular ICU. So; in the meanwhile the CVICU nurses are holdovers and they are having to float, go home early, or take leave. People are falling all over each other and I cannot imagine how the heck i even got this assignment to be honest. If the head hinchos at kaiser knew about this; heads would roll. They had four resources nurses, plus me, plus a couple of other travelers. Anyway, I spent eight hours in the ICU filling out papers, helping out, and other odds and ends. I worked with Rick for the longest and he was the greatest help. I guess he would be since he apparently is a traveler himself; although he has been here a long time.
So, that was my first day and tomorrow will be my first night. August 30 The Image of NursingFor so long nurses have complained that they do not get the respect they deserve. Well; my question is do we really deserve that respect? We go to work and clean our patients; yet most of us do not take the time to truly make a difference. Why is it that the doctors, patients, and other nurses give us a hard time? Is it because we come to work with an attitude? People come to the hospital because they are sick and they want a friendly smiling face to care for them. Just like we did when we were young; we wanted our moms and dads to wipe our face and hold us. These people are no different. We are professionals and it is time we begin acting and performing like professionals. If you are this job solely for the money then get out. If you are in it; and you don't want to be Get Out! I am tired of nurses bringing their troubles to work. We all have troubles; start a damn support group. Patients want the best and deserve the best. Lets give it to them and change the image of nursing. July 18 What is this about? Why can we never get it right? Again, the main stream media focuses on the negatives by our troops, Israel, and every other issue that can possibly help establish peace. What would America do if Mexico or Canada lobbed a few bombs into Texas, Arizona, or Minnesota? I do not think most of us would sit idly by and let this happen. Israel has given up a lot of land that they had won fair and square and now they get kicked in the pants and we all want them to just roll over and play dead.
What is that about?
I think Israel and the U.S. should go in clean out the rift raft of Syria, Iran, and Lebanon, and be done with it. The time has come for us to stop worrying about what the world thinks, do the right think, and piss on the rest.
November 01 American PoliticsWhy is it that we always focus on what's going on in Iraq or Washington D.C.? Why are we not focusing on what is not happening in Washington D.C.?
Today is a great day because we have started discussing the possiblity of getting rid of our current tax system as we know it. This is something that we should all be looking at. Americans like you and I are the ones supporting this country. We need a louder voice speaking for us and the way we are slammed with taxes. I make a great living and I am havng a hard time making ends meet. Can you only imagine those working for minimum wage? How do they provide for themselves or for their families?
Gas is still at $2.70 per gallon on average and I do not think it will go down anytime soon. The holidays are coming soon and those folks who are unfortunate will have an even tougher time making ends meet. While the whiners on the hill are crying about who slapped who, you and I are suffering to feed our families. Send a message to your Senators and Representatives and let them know that we are slapping them in the face to get us back on track.
Enough is enough of all the bickering and fighting. Get us out of this recession and get the money back in our pockets. Stop the whining and send the wine to us.
Enough is Enough! September 25 Natural DisastersThis year has been a bad year for natural disasters. We have had to suffer through the Tsunami and several devastating hurricanes. First, let me say that I wish the best for all of the folks who have had to live through these natural horrors and I hope that you will recover and become prosperous once again.
Now, to all of these uncaring, lack of respect insects that are using these troubled times to gain notoriety and to increase their poll ratings; you make me sick. No one out their purposefully made these disasters go in a certain direction to attack black folks, or the Muslims during the Tsunami. Do you really think the American people are that stupid to believe this crap? Why would you even say such a thing? Do you know how stupid you sound for even mentioning it? Go feed this crap to some other country. It is the American spirit and the American soldiers who have lived and died to give you the right to say the kind of nonsense. Instead of blaming BUSH or the right wing nuts you should be out there with your rubber boots and with your sleeves rolled up to help pick up the pieces of these lost and displaced souls. You with your idiotic rhetoric have made America look foolish. Did anyone of you see this kind of insanity from those folks who suffered and died in the Tsunami? Hell no, they worked together rebuilding their country, towns, and families.
Once again, America has failed to show the world that we live in a diverse society, but yet are still able to get along, pick up the pieces, and move forward like we did on 9/11 and in both the World Wars. I think the problem is that we have created such a spoiled and an entitlement generation that we all want to know what our government can give to us. Our government owes me. Where’s my money, my drugs, my free housing? Where the hell are the people willing to work, pay their own way and give back to each other?
The poor and middle class have become blinded by Nintendo, Play stations, money and greed. Can you people not see that the rich are pitting us against each other and keeping us down? Get an education, send your kids to college, and take back this country. We are the ones supporting the rich fat cats. We are slaves to the establishment and we must change the way America is going and we must not roll over and take it. Stop hating each other and see the real truth. The truth that is holding us back from who we really are and the power we really have to give. No one person or group is keeping black people down except the black man himself. You want to vote, get your ass up early, get out and vote. Change the world. You can do it and can be done. You don't believe me; look at the Chinese, Japanese, and here recently the Mexicans. All of them have found a way to stand up and fight the establishment. Together we can have a country that is better for all of us.
Just do it!
